About the Author

Sydney Finkelstein is the Steven Roth Professor of Management at the Tuck School at Dartmouth College, where he teaches courses on Leadership, Top Management Teams, and Managing Mergers and Acquisitions. He is also Faculty Director of the flagship Tuck Executive Program, as well as a consultant for companies around the world. Professor Finkelstein has conducted extensive research on strategic leadership, published numerous articles in the major journals in his field, and has written ten books.

Donald C. Hambrick is the Smeal Chaired Professor of Management, Smeal College of Business Administration, at The Pennsylvania State University. He holds a PhD degree from The Pennsylvania State University. His research focuses primarily on the study of top executives and their effects on strategy and performance. An active consultant and executive education instructor, he also served as president of the Academy of Management.

Albert A. Cannella Jr. is Koerner Chair in Strategy and Entrepreneurship at Tulane University. He received his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1991. He serves on the editorial review boards of Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Management, Journal of Management Studies, Administrative Science Quarterly, and Strategic Management Journal. His research interests focus on executives, entrepreneurship, and competitive dynamics.

Having added Bert Cannella to the team, once again Syd Finkelstein and Don Hambrick have produced the definitive work on the upper echelons of organizations. A very comprehensive overview of the literature on executives, top management teams, and boards, bound together by an exhaustive sequence of propositions garnered from the current research, this book is essential reading for those studying strategic leadership, and will have a profound impact on future research. Definitely a "must have" book on my bookshelf.

Excellent for Academic Research

This is an excellent review of the state of academic research on CEOs, top management teams, and boards of directors, written by some of the top professors in the field. Gaps and weaknesses in current research are frequently noted, making this book a good source of research ideas for PhD students and professors interested in corporate governance.

The writing styles vary from chapter to chapter, probably depending on who was the lead author for that section; Finkelstein no doubt is behind the discussions of power, for example. However, all are well-organized with extensive citations, similar to a literature review.

I would not necessarily recommend this book for practitioners (managers and executives), or MBA and undergraduate students.

Intriguing book

Excellent reference that covers a good selection of the wierd and wonderful and bestsellers that have earned cult reputations. Endorses many of the books that are already classics and encourages the reading of others that are not so widely known. Great fun volume to browse and to search out the books and authors in your favourite bookstores.

not striking but not bad

I find books like this--the Rough Guides to various sorts of books, including cult, come to mind--fun to read, despite their being pretty lightweight and very much subjective. (Given the premises for them, subjectivity and absence of serious criticism would I suppose be difficult to avoid.)

McKinnon divides her books into 10 categories, like the seedy, young adults, sci-fi, one-of-a-kind and doesn't make a bad job of it in commenting on the books, although I would never have bothered looking at some of the ones I quite liked on the basis of her summaries. For each book she lists a few other supposedly similar ones, and here she strays a bit. Well, a lot, at times. Only the most relaxed sort of free association leads from Hero with a Thousand Faces to Babbitt, surely. . . But balancing this drawback is that non-fiction and comics are scattered freely through the various categories.

The photographs of the different covers many of the titles have been issued with are very interesting. There is, though, a serious problem with the book's layout. The margins are cluttered with whacking great labels for suggested reading ages, book titles, chapter titles, and more still. It's visually confusing and, ugliness aside, this matters. When the pages stick together (they often do) or when one is looking for a specific page, one's eyes dance about looking for the page number somewhere amongst all the other numbers in the margins. And I was nearly 100 pages into the book before I noticed that amidst the marginal clutter were star ratings given to the books. (It's the edition published by Ilex I read; perhaps other editions haven't the design flaws.)

Undemanding and, disappointingly, it didn't leave me eager to hunt down any of the books discussed, but for the time being it's staying with me rather than heading for the charity shop.

Pretty dang good

McFestus shall checklist this one out. Content - 4.5 stars. A tad too many British mod-new wave type titles from the 60's. Probably a tad too many noir type books too. Illustrations - 5 stars. Font size - 1 star (not for anyone over 40 without glasses) - it would be impossible to make the print any smaller and have it readable. Tortuous. Arrangement - the various categories these cult books are divided into - it's sort of thematic and not too clear in my view. 3 stars. Nice try though. McFestus adds them together and gives extra weight to content. Voila - 4 stars.

Very Enjoyable

I have been a fan of Raymond E. Feist, reading the Magician series when I was younger, but I didn't continue reading as he mad more books. I picked this book up, and I was able to enjoy getting back into this series.

An epic return

After bringing us the opening three novels concerning Tal Hawkins and Kaspar, Duke of Olasko, Feist opens his third great Midkemia series, The Darkwar Saga, by expanding on the discovery of the Dasati and their automaton army, the Talnoy. It is the greatest danger to face the conclave since Pug's involvement in the Serpent War and finds us delving into new dimensions for both Midkemia's and Kelewan's newest enemies, as Magnus discovers that the immobile Talnoy are acting as a beacon for the Dasati and rifts are beginning to form between the two worlds.

We commence in bucolic bliss as Caleb, the non-magical son of Miranda and Pug finds himself apprenticing the son and foster-son of Marie, Tad and Zane, two eager lads who have not much to do and an eye for trouble. After they save him from death at the hands of a bandit ambush, we then travel with them as they are turned from soft layabouts into hardened Conclave soldiers and we then learn of a series of murders of Truebloods in the Empire of the Great Kesh. The resulting concern finds Tal and Kaspar and Caleb entering Kesh at different social levels to track down the infamous lair of the Nighthawks, whom they believe responsible for the murders that seek to place Kesh in a state of civil war as the current Emperor nears the end of both his life and reign. In the meantime, Nakor has discovered greater powers are rumbling as he finds the tiniest spark of the Nameless One in the darkly Herculean Bek that promises that there could be a return for Ishar.

Feist is one the finest fantasy authors produced in the late twentieth century and his works on the worlds of Midkemia and Kelewan remain at the peak of the genre. Characterisation is well drawn, we have an excellent mix of old, familiar and lovable characters with new youthful, impetuous ones that engender empathy. Old traditions hover in the background where needed without overshadowing the new bloods making their literary mark. The plot is crisp, the dialogue exciting and the old thrill of looking forward to a new great Feist series rears it's head.

Feist begins another exciting trilogy...

With Flight of the Nighthawks, Raymond E. Feist begins yet another series of books set in the Midkemia universe. Also yet again, he writes a fairly enjoyable tale with a lot of little problems that bring it down to just an enjoyable read instead of a standout. One of the problems is the same as it always is, and he has corrected most of the other ones, but this time, some sloppy writing kept throwing me out of the book that I happened to be enjoying at the time.

Flight of the Nighthawks is a continuation of Feist's "Conclave of Shadows" trilogy, but it has its own series name: The Darkwar Saga. I didn't understand this at the time I read Exile's Return, but now I do. Feist has changed the focus to make it much broader. The back cover copy emphasizes the two brothers, Zane and Tad, but it truly covers the entire Conclave. While I don't mind a limited viewpoint, as in the previous series, it was nice to get information from a bunch of sources this time around. We have not only the boys, but Caleb, Pug, Kaspar and Talwin Hawkins, all involved in the plan to bring down the Nighthawks. The variety of viewpoints gives the book more of an epic feel that I really enjoyed.

While once again Feist avoids any potential misogyny charges by not featuring any female characters, the men he does populate the story with are well-drawn and interesting. He gives us some of the boys' training, but doesn't concentrate on it as much as he did Tal's in the previous series, and he intersperses these chapters with events elsewhere in the world, so that the training sequences don't slow the story down. The wide number of characters also helps in the fact that the boys just weren't the interesting. They were the only shortfalls in the characterization, though, and they could get better once they are on their own a bit. In Flight of the Nighthawks, it seems that their main purpose is to get in the way and to rescue Caleb a time or two.

I also liked the tension that was in this book. Yes, we all know that the good guys are probably going to win (though maybe not right away, as this is book 1), but Feist gives us the action with the possibility that not everybody's going to come out alive. Our heroes aren't perfect, which is also unlike the Conclave books. Talwin is still the best there is in this book, but since he's not the only character, it's mitigated. The other characters do make mistakes, and it's nice to see.

Unfortunately, this brings me to the faults in the book. The writing is kind of simple, very suitable for a young age (though some of the subject matter might not be). This is not a problem. However, sloppiness is, and there is a bit too much of it. First, Pug and his wife Miranda are described twice within the span of ten pages, both their physical appearances and the nature of their relationship. Both times it's as if Feist was introducing them, not describing them as they currently are because there has been a change. That's not something I'm used to from Feist.

Secondly, Caleb and Marie have differing memories of how they got together for no particular story purpose (there is no memory manipulation or anything like that). By differing memories, I'm not talking a detail here or there. I'm talking about how they met, when they became lovers, whether Caleb knew of her husband before he died, major things like that. Both instances are when the character in question is musing about his/her situation, so it can't even be a lie told from one character to another.

Finally, there a bit of internal continuity that Feist gets wrong. At the end of one chapter, Caleb mentions how hard it will be to tell Marie that he'll be leaving with their two boys *without her* the next morning. Then, the next chapter that features them, he has taken her to the Sorcerer's Isle and gotten her settled, spending a few days there with her, and *then* he leaves with the two boys. These are all instances easily avoidable, and I'm surprised they're included here. I do have a review copy of the book, but I have checked it with a published edition and these errors are still there. All of them threw me out of the book when I noticed them, and it took some effort to get back into it.

Writing errors aside, however, Flight of the Nighthawks is a very good continuation of the Midkemia stories, Feist's bread and butter. It's exciting and it begs you not to put the book down, but to continue with one more chapter. Storywise, I think it's stronger than any of the Conclave books. It's too bad the writing issues make it harder to read. I'm holding out hope that the next book will continue with the strengths and leave the weaknesses behind.

It wasGreat book! It was a warm family story and a tear jerker. Perfect for light holiday reading or just when you need a day in bed with a good book. I really like stories that begin at the end and have several back flashes.. Keeps the plot interesting.

With all my love

This tale is an okay read, if you want a relaxing book that doesn't challenge you in any way.
Except perhaps to keep track of the many mothers, daughters, grandmothers and granddaughters. Leave it down and go to work, and come back and you'll be mixing up the first names that are largely used. A paragraph can refer to one woman as a mother, a daughter and a grandmother in one go, so when someone thinks about her mother we have to do an inventory.

Mainly the book tells of a girl who becomes pregnant in Ireland in the early 1980s and both sets of mothers involved, oddly enough, are not keen on marriage for her. Though the boy is quite willing and there is no lone parent support like today. I don't remember Ireland's attitudes as being like that. Fallings out occur and the girl grows up not letting the grandparents on her boyfriend's side meet the little girl. The message is that this is wrong as it hurts all the generations. But that's the sum of the book. There are no sub plots, no further social comment, just a skip across the years from time to time as one or other person reflects on the past. Early on we get a few pages of with-it writing about how the recession has affected the main protagonist, although we hear no more about finance and politics for the rest of the story. Given some of the characters work for County Councils there could have been very interesting opportunities for stories. There is little or no character development. If your message is that brief, it could I suggest be made in a shorter book. The last quarter drags and is repetitive. Tighter editing would have made for something which held our attention better. By the way, when she's trying to get up to date at the end, people don't actually say Lol to each other.

Fans of Patricia Scanlan may be happy with this latest outing. I liked Francesca's Party which was a lot more with-it, about a woman dealing with a breakup, and another book about a woman caring for her mother with Alzheimer's. This one seem to contain a lot of Scanlan's memories of Ireland over the years, a good way to remember what we used to be like.
However Ms Scanlan has changed a lot over the years. Her first novel City Girl was sent around to a few places before securing a publisher with the letter, "Do you want to make a million? Because I do!" This was early Irish chick-lit. She used the proceeds to pay off her mortgage. When her publisher was taking on the British market with her works, publicists were sent around to exhort Irish women to buy more by Scanlan "so we can tell the Brits she's sold a million copies." At the end of With All My Love we see her acknowledgements where she thanks six or seven supernatural beings (I am not sure if White Eagle counts) plus angels, saints and guides for her success in life, before she thanks a single person.

Family, forgiveness and love.

Some books are such that it is difficult to say something different from what everyone else is saying about it. This is the story of 3 generations of women who are learning to forgive. You love them, you hate them, but we all can find a bit of ourselves in each one of them. Who hasn't struggled with forgiving others, especially betrayal? This book will make you cry so be prepared with tissues close by...expect it at the end for sure.

Relationships are difficult and in a family that you are born into that is all you really know. So how do we learn to grow up and apart without destroying the family we came from and the good that we gleaned from them? This book is about women and women have issues...many and varied as do men, but we are also mothers and daughters and that relationship is so tied to everything we say and do that it paints all other aspects of our lives. The relationship between mothers and daughters is such that I sometimes wish I had more than 1 daughter, but I do have 4 sisters so that is lots of work and entertainment. Love is central to this book and isn't that the way it is with family...

This book is well written and thought provoking. Each story is its own (in a way just like each of us is), yet each intertwines with the others to show the way each of our actions ripples into those lives around us. Family is the relationship that makes us who we are good, bad or ugly it is our foundation.

In life, as we grow, we build other relationships that can challenge what we know and make us question who we really are. But in the end we are all connected and seeing that connection can help forgiveness to flourish and bless our lives. What we do matters, what we say can build or destroy, who we are is important and our contributions are noticed.

The novel of After Earth

This review for the novel, have not seen the film. The book gets high ratings because it stands on its own as good science fiction. Novelizations often suffer in the quality department but this one does not. The story is a coming of age one for the character of Kitai Raige, the teenaged son of Cypher Raige who happens to be the Prime Commander of the Rangers. The Rangers are an elite military force tasked with the defense of humanity. After Earth takes place 1000 years after mankind is forced to leave an ecological devastated planet sometime before 2100. The novel has a few chapters that fills in the back history of humanity leaving Earth and the struggles they face up until the present. The book also shows the lineage of the Raige family and its influence. Cypher is a stern father as well as an intimidating commander. A sub-plot is that he is also the first Ghost- able not to feel fear when confronted by an Ursa, a bear-like creature that hunts through fear scent. Kitai wants to be a Ranger like his father but is rejected by the Academy. Cypher takes his son with him on an inspection tour of a colony world (Nova Prime is now mans homeworld) but an asteroid storm damages the ship and an emergency wormhole transport to Earth. The planet has changed radically in the millennium as well as the wildlife. The ship has crashed, father and son the only survivors. Cypher is severely injured so his son must travel across hostile terrain to locate the emergency beacon. The author describes both the action and travel scenes so the reader does feel enmeshed in the story. The tale ends by page 265, the remainder of the book has three short stories about other Rangers that can "ghost". After Earth was surprising in that the reader may want more of this fictional universe to read about. There is a LOT of potential here, from the aliens that harass us to the nature of the evolved animals.

Well, this was just a nothing story.

I admit it. I didn't see the movie, and I have no idea how close the movie and the book were in details. The book is just bad. I listened to the MP3 from overdrive.

It amounts to this: my sister is dead, my dad is awesome and respected by all, but he loved and respected my dead sister more. This turns the son into an arrogant creep. I was rooting for the animals to take them both out.

Because there isn't much of a story, the author also runs several concurrent story lines in attempt to make the book more than 25 pages long. The story starts out with Kita Raige's sister, Senshi, saving him from the Ursa. Kitai's attempt to get through ranger school, and his trip with his dad where they are the sole survivors of a crash landing on earth.

Then several stories run concurrently with this story line. Some of these were (yes, just some of the many were):
1. The destruction of earth, the early Raige family, and who was picked for the ships to go to the new planet. (This was the only interesting part, and there just wasn't much to it.)
2. One of the great Raige family members who becomes the leader of the planet, and this only occurs because the family is so great. Oh, this was just blah.
3. Some other stories which I snoozed through, which was quite amazing because I was driving at the time.
4. Senshi's past history prior to her death.

There was nothing in this book that would ever cause me to read it again.

Whatever they did wrong in the film, they got right in the book. I liked the other stories and characters as well. I hope a sequel lets us find out more about the ursa and their masters.

Some of the examples are old, out dated methods

Overall, this text is not bad, although several instructional areas are out-dated material, ie: marking "shell casings, "bullets", on the face,etc. Also, todays training does not include marking handguns on every piece that can be removed, ie: frame, cylinder, barrel, grips, etc.
