The Leveling (A Mark Sava Spy Novel Book 2), by Dan Mayland

These days, Mark Sava spends more time in tutoring sessions than in cloak-and-dagger rendezvous. The former CIA station chief of Azerbaijan has settled into the modest life of a professor in Baku…until an assassin makes a brazen attempt on his life in the hallowed halls of the national library.

The Azeri government deems Sava, with his complex past, a security threat and orders him out of the country immediately. At the same time, the CIA orders Sava back to the US. But when he receives cryptic photos that lead him to believe his friend John Decker has been kidnapped—Sava knows he has no option but to find Decker.

He teams up with ex–CIA spy and former girlfriend Daria Buckingham, and the two soon find themselves being chased by Chinese intelligence agents through the underworlds of Turkmenistan and Iran, caught in the middle of a secret conflict over oil that has the US and Iran tumbling headlong into war.

Filled with the espionage intrigue and pulse-pounding action that made The Colonel’s Mistake a runaway hit, The Leveling brings to life in electrifying detail one of the most dangerous regions of the globe.

Review
Praise for Dan Mayland:

"Mayland beautifully captures the high stakes games played in an increasingly complex world.” —Kyle Mills, New York Times Bestselling author of The Immortalists

"Dan Mayland has an excellent understanding of modern Iran." —Gene Garthwaite, author of The Persians

“Mayland’s insight into Central Asian espionage and his ability to craft a breathless thriller are exceeded only by his understanding of the human heart. Think you can guess what The Leveling refers to? Think again.”
-Orest Stelmach – bestselling author of The Boy from Reactor 4

Action and suspense in little known locales
By plane
Second of two novels about Mark Sava, former CIA station chief of Azerbaijan, his former employee and girl friend Daria Buckingham, and ex navy Seal John Decker.
The book can stand alone, and there is no gray area dependent upon knowledge of incidents in the first book "The Colonel's Mistake" to detract from enjoying "The Leveling"
Mayland has traveled extensively in Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan and Iran and incorporates his knowledge of these countries to tell a spy story beyond the normal settings of England, France, Scandinavia, North Africa and the mid east.
Sava has left his position as CIA station chief in Azerbaijan and taken up teaching at a university in Baku it's capital, in order to remain in a city that he has come to be very fond of.
While tutoring a student shots are taken at him and he later finds that his apartment has been ransacked. He is given no chance to find out the cause of the attempt on his life and why his apartment should be torn apart and what was being looked for when an Azerbaijani official, and theoretical friend of his orders him out of the country as a potential source of trouble. As he is about to leave he gets an e-mail from John Decker, copy also to Daria whom he hasn't seen in some time providing clues about trouble that John has gotten into.
Sava and Daria get together again and begin a search for Decker taking them through Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan and finally into Iran discovering an international plot that could lead even the United States into war. Action is fast, well done and places the characters into scenarios that are logical and based upon current world events. With the book's ending it is quite obvious that Dan Mayland is not done with the three leading protagonists and they will appear again shortly. Highly recommended for fast credible action and descriptions of areas outside of the normal spy novel settings.

Well done. Well written. Believeable
By Lindae
Highly recommend. I am somewhat picky about books and while I will finish a book that has a good story line but not else, there is not much fun in it. I can feel my brain rotting. I am willing to pay good money for some authors (James Lee Burke whose books I keep, Lee Child whose books get lent and passed around.) But for my kindle I am kind of a cheap skate, because it seems difficult to give them to family-friendly....but this is an author I would buy just having found him via Prime lending library. I found myself looking up unfamiliar cities, terrains, and wondering if a description of an elite Chinese neighborhood had any validity. Sounded plausible. As an aside I am married to a retired Army Special Forces guy (Green Beret,) and the Navy Seal seemed right. A TV show a few years back had the supposed ex. SF hero run past dead bad guys and NOT pick up their guns even though he was out of ammo..... This author doesn't make such silly mistakes.
Am typing on my kindle fire....kind of tricky....please forgive mistakes I haven't caught.

Well written and exciting
By Joyce
This is the first Mark Sava story I read and I could not put it down. I loved the action and adventure Dan Mayland created for his characters! Mark Sava, ex- CIA station chief of Azerbaijan; his friend John Decker, ex Navy Seal; and co-worker/girlfriend Daria Buckingham experience threats and danger as they are forced to travel through a number of countries and deal with savory characters in handling their situation. When I read the first in the series, The Colonel's Mistake, after this I already knew the main characters and it wasn't quite as catching for me as this one was, despite it being well written and exciting. I think if I'd read them in the correct order I would have enjoyed the first one even more since the characters were being introduced and developed. I highly recommend this series - but be warned - you will not want to put it down once you start....!!
