Larissa Quinn travels directly from Miss Simmons' Seminary to the wilds of Westmoreland to care for her elderly aunt. After the day-long journey, the only place for the weary travelers to sleep is the barn of an over-booked inn with only a single vacancy. Larissa, who has no intention of sleeping on a pile of straw, steps forward, claiming to be newly wed to Sir Randall Trent, baronet and unwitting accomplice in Larissa's scheme for adventure, in order to claim the last empty room.

Convinced they will never see one another again and that no one will be the wiser about their little white lie, Larissa and Sir Randall part ways, though not before Sir Randall can bestow upon Larissa a passionate kiss that sends her reeling. Both are surprised to be thrown together again so soon in London for the Season.

When their secret is discovered, Larissa and Sir Randall are forced to band together in the face of a crime spree in which Sir Randall is implicated. Life is about to offer Larissa an adventure unlike any she had ever imagined.

From Publishers Weekly
This charming if uneven Edwardian from Marks (Geek to Chic) opens as Miss Larissa Quinn completes her education and journeys to Westmoreland estate to become the companion to an aunt she doesn't know. She resolves, however, to have one adventure before resigning herself to her fate. On arriving at an inn, Larissa, spys a handsome gentleman, and claims that the two are newlyweds in order to secure the last remaining room. Once settled, it takes a little convincing to get the man, Sir Randall Trent, to go on with the charade. After a chaste night, the two board the coach assuming that no one will be the wiser and that they will never meet again. But Larissa's very undoddering aunt eschews dull country life for the London season, and when Larissa and Sir Randall inevitably meet, their marriage slips out of their control—leading to unpleasant and possibly deadly consequences. The lovers don't quite come into focus and often seem not to know whether to fight or kiss, but the inventive plot carries them along with sweet abandon.

Review
Marks mingles modern sensibilities with the traditional setting. A promising mystery element may provide some additional appeal for readers who like both romance and suspense. --Booklist

About the Author
California-born Shirley Marks is delighted to have penned a Regency romance. Her wish would be not just to go to England but to step back in time 200 years.

This reader's quandary.
By OLT
I've been reading Regency romance for decades and have a high tolerance for boring plots if the characters are well defined and the love story is romantic and not exasperating. For the first half of this book I had no idea where the mystery was that other reviewers had talked about and found the characters so shallow and so unappealing and the romance so contrived that I almost put it down.

But I persevered, hoping to get to that mystery, and, yes, it finally arrived. That made the reading tolerable but still not good, because the characters themselves failed to develop more depth.

It's a clean love story and perhaps that's the reason it has received so many high-star reviews. I like clean romance and I like spicy romance (as long as the sex does not overwhelm the plot), so that didn't enter into my evaluation. I just took into consideration my reading experience. Was it enjoyable? Not very because of the lack of depth in plot and characters and a great deal of annoying anachronistic behavior.

Pandora's Platitudes

Miss Quinn is going to live with an elderly aunt after finishing school. She meets Randall at an inn Randall is on the way to visit his uncle. They pretend to be married spend the night together and travel together the next day. The Aunt is not elderly, the uncle is seeking a wife, Miss Quinn and Randall meet again in London where all kinds of interesting events occur. Randall finds stolen jewelery in his possession, is arrested, is shot. Well you get the idea. Excellent Read

Based on a very modern idea of what life might have been like "back then."
By Eleanor Latham
I honestly could not believe the initial premise: the kind of girls' boarding school from which Miss Quinn has just graduated would spend a fair bit of time on perspectives that would not lead to Miss Quinn's initial actions on which the rest of the story is based. After this, if you are looking for historical fiction, skip this one. If you are looking for a quick (historical, sort of) ROMANCE, then you should enjoy this work. You do have to be able to suspend disbelief for more than the usual number of coincidences and misunderstandings.
