Tschai, by Jack Vance

The four Planet of Adventure volumes chronicle Adam Reith's saga on the planet Tschai, under the amber glow of the star Carina 4269. Reith is a Terran first-in scout stranded on a planet which he learns is now occupied, after an ancient struggle which has come to a standstill, by three technically advanced cultures who now guardedly share the surface while the original inhabitants- the mysterious Pnume- dwell in subterranean depths. On Tschai, Reith discovers to his surprise (and disgust) Earth-derived humans whom the three off-world cultures imported long ago, who have undergone physical and perceptual modifications to closely mimic their masters. The enslaved humans retain however that most human of traits- ruthless self-interest.

In The Chasch, Reith encounters a handful of free humans ranging the face of Tschai, and begins his quest to secure a space-worthy craft with which to return to Earth. Resourcefulness is Reith's byword as his odyssey takes him among the domains of aliens, humans, and their various collateral societies.

In the final book of the omnibus, Vance introduces the Pnume, one of his most enigmatic and incomprehensible creations. Forced to live in the depths of Tschai by the long-ago surface struggle between the invading aliens, the Pnume have occupied themselves within an eternal obsession for collecting and preserving Tschai's historical oddities. Reith is horrified to discover that they seek to exhibit him in their Museum of Foreverness.

Jack Vance is at his best as he introduces the cultures and beings who make up the chaotic population of this ancient planet. Reith's path to return to Earth is thorny and fraught with constant threats. His epic tale is a masterpiece of story-telling.

Jack Vance Sci-fi
By JDV
This is my favorite Jack Vance science fiction story. I think it has a better story than the Demon Princes novel. Tschai was sold at one time as the "Planet of Adventure" series, made up of: City of the Chasch, Servants of the Wankh, The Dirdir and The Pnume. I think it's best to buy the whole series in one book as they all follow the same storyline of an explorer trapped on an alien planet inhabited by a native race, three races of alien invaders (who hate each other), and humans captured on Earth and brought here by one of the alien invaders thousands of years ago. The explorer engages with each race in turn in his efforts to escape and return to Earth.

Tschai is worth a visit!
By Kimball Dawes
The first Jack Vance novel I ever read was City of the Chasch, Book 1 in what was then called by the dreadful title, "Planet of Adventure" series. I was in seventh grade, and a friend, who had found it in a second hand bookshop, threw it at me and said enthusiastically, “Read this!” I did and was immediately and irrevocably hooked--'bewitched' is a better term--because from that point on, I searched for and bought every Jack Vance book I could find. I eventually found the other three books in the "Planet of Adventure" series, not necessarily in the right order. It remains my favorite Vance series, along with the Dying Earth novels, though I have savored just about every one of his books that I’ve ever read. They transport you, very believably, to other planets, other lands, other cultures, other customs…you can virtually smell these places and hear their music and clamor. Jack Vance had a way with language…his way, and his books are well-worth the reading and the re-reading.

The Tschai tetralogy is fine and vintage story-telling, recounting the action-filled adventures of the Earthman, Adam Reith, who has been marooned on the savage planet, Tschai, and is determined to return home, despite the seemingly insurmountable odds facing him. The whole series is contained in one volume. Imagine that! No waiting around for decades for a multi-volume series that may, or may not, hold up in its quality of writing or ever end for that matter!

Master Vance is very much worth your reading time.

The name is new but the song remains the same
By Dave Loeff, author
This eBook is an omnibus edition of the four short novels (most Jack Vance novels are short) which collectively make up the Planet of Adventure series. Although the eBook is reasonably priced, the print version is a slightly better bargain (unless you add shipping). Since the printed version has ample reviews, I won't say much more. This is typical Vance, full of odd cultures and species, customs and rituals, a low key hero and and his somewhat eccentric sidekicks. Because each novel is just as long as it needs to be and no longer, some readers may be frustrated until they acquire another Vance title.
