Well written
By Me!
Lots of twists and turns...very satisfying read. If you're tired of ballrooms and like an intelligent woman as the main character, you won't be disappointed.

That's it! It's over for me! I am in love with A Rake's Midnight Kiss by Anna Campbell. I didn't think it would be possible to love the second book in the Sons of Sin series more than the first (Seven Nights in a Rogue's Bed), but I do!
I have to applaud Anna Campbell for her talent in creating exciting stories complete with interesting, intelligent characters, steamy love scenes and bits of humor. This is one of those books that made it impossible for any one to reach me, unless they wanted something tossed at their heads and a four letter reply! I do believe I was more um, aggressive towards interruptions this time around and with good reason!
Sir Richard Harmsworth has been tainted by scandal his whole life, branded as a bastard since birth, he tries not to let society know how much his lack of legitimacy bothers him. Believing the Harmsworth Jewel will silence his critics, he tracks the jewel to a cottage and there, disguised as a burglar, attempts to steal the jewel from an unsuspecting woman named Genevieve. When that proves unsuccessful, he disguises his identity and poses as a willing student to her father, the vicar. Richard doesn't count on Genevieve's appealing intelligence, strength and humor getting in the way of his quest for the Harmsworth Jewel and soon, he is struggling to decide what he wants more, the jewel or Genevieve.
Genevieve has learned the hard way that a woman with brains is rarely praised by men so she's built an almost impenetrable armor to defend herself with. She discourages men before they have a chance to hurt her with their careless words. This makes her relationship with Richard antagonistic for a while but it was fun to watch Richard struggle to win her over. He really had to work hard to get Genevieve to even give him the time of day! A humbling experience for a man like him. Genevieve also has great instincts and it doesn't take long before she figures out that the mysterious burglar and her father's new apprentice are one and the same.
The constant banter between Richard and Genevieve was lively, amusing and made their unusual relationship more entertaining. I just couldn't get enough of their scenes together! It was an odd courtship for an odd pair. These two are never boring. Their relationship, as passionate it can get, is actually more about getting to know one another and accepting each other even though society dictates that they should have nothing to do with one another. These are two people who are lonely and though they don't know it, they need at least one person in the world that is brave enough to see the truth of them and love them any way. I know I identified with both characters myself.
What made Richard Harmsworth so darn attractive to me was in fact, his affection for his dog Sirius. With some readers it's men with children but with me, it's men and animals. Richard may have questionable parentage but his attitude towards his dog, the way he treats him and regards him as a friend made me melt! Of course, Genevieve, with her keen eye and sharp mind didn't miss out on that peculiar relationship either. Sirius was definitely one of my favorite characters! Of course, it was nice to see Jonas and Sidone again and to get to know a little bit about the third man in that particular group of friends, the Duke of Sedgemoor.
Shameless book hussy that I am (or maybe it's a trait that only certain authors bring out in me), I can't wait to read about Camden Rothermere, The Duke of Sedgemoor. He seems like he just might be hiding even bigger secrets than Richard. However, Cam is going to have to be truly remarkable to outshine Richard in my eyes. All I can say is that I am now a huge fan of Anna Campbell and her Sons of Sin series and dare I repeat myself when I say that even though A Rake's Midnight Kiss hasn't been released yet, I can't wait to get my hands on the next book!

Witty banter leads to passionate kisses in this page turner
By Kim Adams
Soul meets soul on lovers' lips. ~Percy Shelley, Prometheus Unbound
Anna Campbell is known for her passionate romances with tormented characters. Yet Campbell demonstrates her versatile voice with A RAKE'S MIDNIGHT KISS - it is a sweet romance with tormented characters who find passion despite subterfuge. That's the beauty of Campbell's talent - she draws readers into the plot and takes them on a dramatic ride through Regency England. Readers feel the cutting edges of a snobbish ton. It is such a treat, then, to witness the hero and heroine engage in witty banter that initially shelters them from gossip mongers ... and ultimately brings them together as "soul meets soul".
A RAKE'S MIDNIGHT KISS is Book 2 in the Sons of Sins series - somehow I missed reading Book 1, SEVEN NIGHTS IN A ROGUE'S BED (mea culpa). This is a standalone story that references characters from Book 1 and will probably be in Book 3. I enjoyed A RAKE'S MIDNIGHT KISS for its passionate adventure. I look forward to procuring Book 1 and waiting for Book 3.
Recommended read for Regency fans who appreciate a "meatier" story beyond the ballroom.
I received an ARC from Forever for an impartial review.
