Got My Own Magic Show!

I was really lucky to find this very amazing magic book at least a week before my eldest daughters 4th birthday. I got to practice these magic tricks and I was even surprised myself that I immediately learned how to perform them. The book was really helpful and very detailed in providing instructions to execute the tricks properly. To summarize it all, the kids and even the adults at my daughters birthday party had a blast and enjoyed my very own magic show.

I have always wanted to learn magic tricks. I make it a habit to watch magic shows on television because I find them really entertaining. This kindle book serves as my hope in learning to do magic tricks on my own. I like that the fact that it is concise and very easy to follow. The instructions seem really simple and I know that if I practice enough, I would master the tricks in no time.

condescending and annoying

This book was suggested to me by Amazon as a romance, but I don't think it is one.

First of all, there's not even an inkling of romance with the mega-star mentioned in the summary - he's actually barely in the story. There is, however, an extremely handsome, perfect (you get the drift) bartender who saves Holly's butt with his knowledge of the city's vendors when she realizes she's bitten off more than she can chew. If money was no object, why would it matter where she could get cheap flowers?

Onward - what really irritated me about this book was the number of times the author mentions how much better a traditional English Christmas is, especially compared to those tacky nouveau holidays every American prefers. I didn't check the word count, but it didn't take more than an hour to read and that was mentioned often enough to feel condescending and obnoxious - okay, we get it, you don't like colorful lights! (I was kind of surprised Dean & Holly didn't commiserate about how dreadful the colonies are.) Sure it was funny to see her take the snotty PA down a peg when she tries to insist on a modern party, but it seemed too easy and thrown in specifically for that "hahaha take that, evildoer" delight.

Then there's the way that not being with your family at Christmas is treated as an unforgivable sin. Holly is wracked with guilt because she knows she's ruining her parents' favorite holiday (and her birthday!) by trying to boost her career. Even the sexy bartender gives her the brushoff when he realizes what a rotten person she must be to act like that.
Don't worry, though - she realizes family is more important than anything and rushes home to be with her mom and dad in their tiny little village and be glad she isn't one of those horrible people after all.

Not (really) a romance. Condescending about holidays. Irritating cast. Perhaps if it had been fleshed out into something longer, with some character development - Dean's temper could have been interesting, as well as Alex's career - maybe it would have worked better.

I won't make reading this a Christmas tradition.

Enjoyable short Christmas read!

I got a kindle for Christmas and I'm slowly reading through a lot of downloaded Christmas books. Mistletoe in Manhatten is the second Christmas gem that I have discovered (the other is I'm Dreaming of a Wilde Christmas (A laugh-out-loud romantic comedy) which is a hilarious Christmas read). This is a wonderful short and cosy read that left me with a nice Christmassy glow. I will certainly be reading more Talli Roland's books.

Typical Talli Roland - i.e. fabulous fun!

I've read several of Talli's books now and have enjoyed them very much. I really like her writing style, and how the storylines are realistic, funny and often sweet. Mistletoe in Manhattan is no exception.

Holly West is currently helping out at her parents' party-planning company. She really wants to get out, though, and run her own high-flying company, but it's not as simple as that. So when an opportunity comes her way to plan a celebrity party in New York, she jumps at the chance. It could be her big break.

On arriving in New York, she quickly runs into trouble when she discovers that the celebrity - Dean Layton - has a very unpleasant assistant who has no intention of helping Holly out. Luckily, the barman in the hotel she's working in is much more helpful, and Holly is soon putting together the party of the year. Sadly, more problems are thrown at her, and she worries she may not be home in time for her family Christmas - which is also her birthday. Will she stick out the job until the end, or is family more important?

Overall, I found this to be another cracking read from Talli Roland. I admit to liking her novel length stuff best, but that's just because I want more of that engaging, easy to read, fun writing style! More please!!

Brandon's best work in the shorter format

As an admittedly rather rabid fan of Brandon, I tore through this book when it showed up on my doorstep today. And I have to say, it is an excellent, excellent novella, certainly Brandon's best effort in this format yet.

The Emperor's Soul is set in Sel, the same planet as Elantris (though very far apart from where Elantris takes place). The magic in this world takes the form of elaborate seals, the inspirations for which were drawn from the red signature seals commonly found on East Asian artwork. Though in our world it only leaves an impression of authorship, on Sel, an intricate seal can be used to change the history of an object in a process called Forgery, thus changing its present state. A battered old desk can be Forged so that it had a caring owner in the past, transforming it into a sturdy, well-maintained version of itself. The book follows the captivity of a talented Forger who is faced with an impossible task; Forging the soul of the emperor, who has been rendered brain-dead by an assassination attempt.

I found that a usual problem with Brandon's other novellas is that they feel like a chapter in a larger novel; interesting, but without a strong conclusion which leaves too many open plot lines and a sense of frustration when it ends. However, The Emperor's Soul focuses on one self-contained event (that of Shai's captivity), so despite the short length of the book, the conclusion of the novella gives a sense of immense satisfaction to the reader.

To express myself in a more succinct way, The Emperor's Soul feels like it was _meant_ to be a novella, rather than a novel put on a diet against its will. The book is jammed packed with emotion and tension, but it works well because it is short enough that the reader isn't emotionally exhausted by the end of it. Every character introduced pulls their weight in carrying the plot along. No words are wasted while the book makes surprisingly deep inquiries into the complex motivations of each character. The entire book just feels _tight_.

In the end, all I really want to say is, well done, Mr. Brandon Sanderson! You've successfully mastered the art of the novella.

Clever, philosophical and poignant. I want more!

The Emperor's Soul is set on Sel, the same world as Elantris (but in an empire far away and unrelated to those events.) Shai is a master of the art of Forging - mutating an object's history to change its appearance in the present. However, she's been caught trying to steal the nation's most famous relic, and now she awaits execution... unless she can forge the emperor a new soul in just over three months. An impossible task, but Shai will take any chance she gets.

Brandon Sanderson is in top form as usual, despite the shortness of this novella. Shai is a thief and has no compunctions about being opportunistic, but her driving force is her pride in her art. She's proud and tenacious - almost to a fault. I wouldn't exactly say she's lovable, but who doesn't love a good noble thief? The supporting characters, with the exception of Gaotona and Emperor Ashravan, don't really have enough time to be developed, but that's understandable for a book less than 170 pages long.

I loved the examination of identity in this book. In order for Shai to be such a good Forger, she has to be extremely good at observing both people and objects - the little things that influence them, their motivations, how they can be manipulated. She needs to be able to produce her desired changes with the minimum of effort required for it to appear natural (think about the complexity of planting an idea via a dream in Inception - it's the same concept.) Shai does this instinctively, and it greatly adds to the complexity of the plot and the world building. Of course, she also does it deliberately, and how she pieced together Ashravan's life from notes and interviews is fascinating.

I was slightly dissatisfied at the end because it was over too quickly and I wanted more! More of the characters, more plot, more of the world. I can't really complain about that, though - this is a novella, and I knew that going into it, and Sanderson does a great job with it. The only thing that felt rushed was Shai's task [SPOILER WARNING] - she said it would ordinarily take her two years at least, but she manages to complete it in three months - why was she able to do it so much faster? I would've liked some sort of explanation. [END SPOILERS]

I hope Sanderson writes more books featuring Shai and the Empire - perhaps even coming into contact with characters from Elantris.

A Novella That Feels Much Bigger Than It Is

Brandon Sanderson is fantastic at creating magic systems. From the fully realized Mistborn saga that has three magic systems to the still very mysterious system being crafted in The Stormlight Archive series. In The Emperor's Soul, he has given us another fantastic magic system that (without spoiling much) allows people to rewrite the history of objects.

Even though it is a Novella, you grow really attached to protagonist, Shai, in the short time we spend with her. Most of that time is confined to a single room, but you would hardly notice it unless someone points out for you. You learn a lot about her past and her way of thinking as she has to sort of explain herself to one of her captors in order to further her own goals in the story.

The fight scenes are well done - reminds me of Mistborn - fast and the magic system naturally comes into play to give the protagonist that much needed edge.

I could go on about the book, but really in the end it is a quick but satisfying read. It is a world and magic system I really hope he chooses to explore in further books, whether they be novella or novel sized stories.

An Excellent Read

I purchased this book upon advice of a friend, and I'm so glad I did. The story starts slowly, with timely character development and growing sympathy for the main character, Michelle. As she heads back to her small Oregon hometown for a high school reunion, Michelle encounters her distant past as a 45+ year old woman, reuniting with some high school friends. They go on a version of one of their old high school adventures and Michelle is transported back in time. As an adult cast back into her own past, she begins a new adventure in her hometown - just in time to meet the younger version of herself for her own senior year of high school. The timing of this journey back through time couldn't have been planned better - it's a magical yet stressful year of school for students across the US, adding in the encounters between the adult and younger versions of the protagonist, and the re-living of some key moments of "their" lives. If there is one thing I would have liked to see in the book, it would have been more happy moments as the growth of the adult Michelle branches away from the previous version of herself -- she is doing something that many of us dream of, both reliving the past and being able to stop or change some traumatic incidents, so I wanted it to last a little longer. Yes, I am a romantic at heart! But, like all things, the story needed to come to an end. The author nails the ending in a way that won't surprise those who lived in the area where the book is set, but the set up for that ending and the resolution of the story still comes as a shock - which is exactly as it should be. I highly recommend this story, and will definitely look for more by the author.

One Sitting Read, Amazingly Addictive!

Have you ever said to yourself “If only I knew then what I know now I’d…” I am sure we all have things our former teen selves did that we wish we could undo and maybe re-do if given the chance. Be it a life changing alteration that sets us on a brand-new path, or something so minor that it’s hardly noticeable. Then again would the change really be worth the effort, our current life path could be altered severely enough that the life we know could be turned on its head, figuratively speaking, thus causing a major uproar in fates path.
Imagine that you are given that chance in real time, real life to alter your path to maybe a happier one…imagine that your life is thrown on its head without your permission or being aware its happened until it’s too late. That very thing happened to Michelle during one of her adventures with three of her high school classmates, she is thrown back to her senior year of high school, only this time she is an outside observer being given the chance to guide her younger self onto a path that would set her up for a different and maybe better future and life. This time however, her path will forever be altered, and she will begin to re-discover a side to her that she put on the back burner for her husband.
Once again John Heldt sends the reader on an emotional journey of life’s ups and downs through a beautifully written tale of love, life, and the path each of us sets out on from a very young age. This is book #2 is his Northwest Passage series picking up with a different set of characters but yet very similar circumstances to those Joel encountered in The Mine; this time though the main character is an older version of the woman whose life is forever altered by the encounter and friendship she develops as a teen. A story that pulls at the heartstrings of the reader keeping them engaged from the very start, this like its predecessor is an addictive, mesmerizing, and beautiful tale that you will not want to put down! I literally read this book in one sitting and was very anxious to get into the third book in the series!

Interesting concept

This book has a creative concept, with a full-circle outcome, which was enjoyable. However, in the passages of writing in teenage-speak, the book misses the mark. Kids just didn't talk that way during these different specific times-- it created an awkwardness that detracted from the story. But LOVED the ideas the novel brought to mind, the "what would you do?" factor. The main character was completely selfless-- call me cynical, but this was a bit unbelievable as well. Still worth the read.
