Eastwood Vs. Malkovich, with the President in the Middle...
By Benjamin J Burgraff
Clint Eastwood, in his first film after completing his masterpiece, UNFORGIVEN, chose a winner with Wolfgang Petersen's suspenseful IN THE LINE OF FIRE. As 30-year veteran Secret Service agent Frank Horrigan, Eastwood had the misfortune of protecting President Kennedy, November 22, 1963, and the specter of not reacting quickly enough has never fully left him, through the subsequent years. At the other end of the spectrum is ex-CIA assassin Mitch Leary (brilliantly portrayed by John Malkovich), who had become 'excess baggage' for the intelligence community, due to budget cuts. After surviving a bungled attempt to kill him, Leary decides to vent his rage at his 'betrayal' by assassinating the President. In his research, he discovers that the only agent still active from the 1963 team is Horrigan, and, deciding they shared a kinship, he begins to tease Horrigan with clues about himself, and how he'll kill the President.
The film builds up a 'head of steam' from the very first scene, as Horrigan and his partner, Al D'Andrea (Dylan McDermott, long before television stardom in THE PRACTICE) take down a band of counterfeiters, and the edginess never lets up, as Leary, introducing himself as 'Booth', begins his series of fateful calls to Horrigan. Facing mounting opposition from the head of the Presidential Secret Service team (Gary Cole), as well as the White House Chief of Staff (future Senator Fred Dalton Thompson), Horrigan badgers, insults, and belittles everyone's work, knowing the potential assassin will find any crack in the security, and take advantage of it. Only his boss, Sam Campagna (FRAZIER star John Mahoney), his partner, D'Andrea, and fellow agent Lilly Raines (Rene Russo, in another star-making performance), take him seriously, with Raines soon falling in love with the cantankerous agent.
The plot is full of twists and turns, as Horrigan barely misses capturing Leary, twice, and Leary, at one point, actually saves Horrigan's life (while ending D'Andrea's). Strung so tightly that he starts making bad 'calls', Horrigan is finally removed from Presidential security...just as Leary is about to make his move...
IN THE LINE OF FIRE does for the Secret Service what BACKDRAFT did for firefighters, and television's NYPD BLUE did for policemen; it shows the organization not as a group of faceless supermen, but as dedicated people performing an essential service, protecting the lives of others. As Leary sneers to Horrigan, "I'm the offense, you're the defense," and that analogue truly describes the difficulty of their job; they must find the means to protect the President against whatever misdeed a perpetrator can concoct. While Clint Eastwood's Horrigan may be far more of a 'lone wolf' than the Agency would, in real life, tolerate, his dedication to his job reflects well on those unique individuals who would 'take a bullet' for the President.
It is an excellent suspense film, and a worthy addition to any Clint Eastwood collection!

Being John Malkovich
By Sky
In the Line of Fire should probably be on my Amazon Listmania List of "16 Flicks Guaranteed To Leave A Permanent Impression" (click on my name above and check out my profile if you'd like to see the List). Who can forget the Oscar and Globe nominated performance of John Malkovich as the diabolical assassin with the deadpan delivery and that home-made gun?
And Clint Eastwood, as always, is as fresh as ever...even though this is one of his corner-turning films of the 90s where he started taking on the persona of an "aging" character as opposed to the "middle-aged" tough guy roles of his 80s run.
Rene Russo (who seems to have disappeared from the screen as of this writing) was looking very 2007 Fergie/Drew Barrymore. And there are a ton of other popular character actors that populate the cast of In the Line of Fire that helped make this one of the best movies of 1993.
Wolfgang Peterson -- who has other winners in his stable like Das Boot Das Boot - The Director's Cut , Outbreak Outbreak and The Perfect Storm The Perfect Storm -- directs In the Line of Fire and keeps the action coming and the witty dialogue flowing. There are a few on-foot chase scenes that were very thrilling, but lacked in the that-could-really-happen department.
If you've never seen In the Line of Fire and you like a good Thriller, this will give you 2 hours of thorough entertainment. If the last time you saw it was back towards its 1993 release, you'll enjoy another look as it holds up very nicely almost 15 years later.

In the Line of Fire on Blu Ray
By Steve Douglas
Individual plot summaries of these movies can be found everywhere as well as opinions on the plots, acting and actors so I will focus only on the quality of the transfer of this movie to Blu Ray.
In the Line of Fire was shot some time ago but still has legs as an intriguing and suspenseful film. This Blu Ray came only with the one Blu Ray disc.
The video transfer is really quite clean with good details in the dark and shadow areas. At no point did I see any artifacts or dirt and, except in one of the deleted scenes, no stair stepping or color banding anywhere. The Mbps rate appeared to average in the mid twenties. Colors were natural looking and the focus of the transfer to blu ray is generally soft and film like without the video type color popping that we often see on some of today's films. Since I do not have the Standard Def version I really can't make a comparison between the formats but the Blu Ray transfer offers good contrast and clean imaging.
The audio transfer comes as a lossless Dolby True HD 5.1 and was surprisingly very good. I did not expect much for the audio as the film is more dialogue driven than action but there were many opportunities for the audio editors to steer discreet foley fx to all channels. Pans from front to back and back to front were there when appropriate and you get a very nice, clean and transparent sound for both the front and rear sound stages. Good separation between the front, center and sides for the music track and proper audio leveling all around.
My big beef with this and many Blu Rays are the multiple preview ads for other films. These ads take up space on the disc that could go to less compression and thus a higher quality audio and video transfer.
Several extras on the disc included different languages, some unfinished in post production deleted scenes, none of which were terribly essential or worthy of an extended version, commentary and a couple of short docs on the making of the film.
All in all, a very worthy film to add to your Blu Ray collection.
All my reviews focus solely on the quality of the transfers to Blu Ray of both video and audio and I do hope that this review has been of some help to you in deciding upon your purchase decisions and that I am on the correct path with this type of review.
Thanks for reading.
