A Wonderful Story,

The Light Behind The Window is told in dual-time narrative, a concept that works so well and that Lucinda Riley has mastered excellently. Weaving the modern-day story with the historical background adds a further dimension to the story.

Emilie de la Marinieres finds herself the sole inheritor of a grand chateau in southern France, the death of her Mother has evoked many feelings for her, not all of them good, and many of them very painful. Emilie has always distanced herself from her Mother and has been living a very ordinary life in Paris. As Emilie begins to sort through her family affairs, she discovers a notebook of poems, written by her Father's sister Sophia. Sophia was never spoken about and is something of a mystery, as Emilie begins to dig deeper into the family secrets she become more and more involved in the past.
Back in 1943, Constance Carruthers has been chosen to become part of the Special Operations Executive, she's an ordinary office worker, newly married to a husband who has been missing in action since almost the beginning of the war. After intense training, Constance finds herself in occupied France on a dangerous mission that could cost her her life.
Constance finds herself caught up in a complex situation masterminded by Edouard de la Mariniers, and so the connection between the two families begins.
Back in the modern day story, Constance's grandson Sebastian has appeared, and he and Emilie become closer and closer. Does Sebastian know more than he is admitting to?

I became really emotionally attached to these characters, although I did find Emilie's story a little slow in the beginning, everything soon began to move at a very quick pace and the connections to Constance's war-time story were riveting.
Churchill's Special Operations Executive programme was completely new to me, a part of the war that I knew nothing about and I found the details entralling.
This novel really is a joy to read, expertly woven together and mixing social history with family dramas and love and relationships - the perfect blend.

"The Lavender Garden"

I received an advance copy of this book via NetGalley from Atria Books.

In 1999, Emilie de la Martinières inherits the family chateau in the south of France when her mother dies. Emilie has spent her entire life distancing herself from her mother, so her first reaction is to sell the chateau as quickly as possible and return to her safe, orderly life in Paris. But she finds herself drawn to the chateau, feeling a sense of unfinished business as she envisions its possibilities. Her decision to use the money from her mother's estate to renovate the chateau kicks off a chain of events that will teach Emilie more than she ever thought she could learn about her family and about herself.

In 1944, British SOE agent Constance Carruthers finds herself on the steps of the de la Martinières chateau. Her supervisors in London dropped her in France with a specific mission, but she is left at loose ends when she learns that all her contacts have been arrested by the gestapo. The only person in France she thinks she can trust directs her to the chateau as her only hope for a safe house. When Édouard de la Martinières welcomes her into his home, Constance is swept into the middle of a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse between the occupying Nazis and the French resistance movement.

It took me about 150 pages to really feel like I was engaged in the story, but I ended up enjoying it. At first, Emilie's character and her way of talking and thinking seemed cold and stilted, but now that I've finished, I believe that was intentional. Emilie has spent her entire life trying not to connect with people or make any kind of lasting impression, and I warmed up to her as the story went on and she started to grow and change. I do feel like some of the coincidences and revelations in the book stretched belief at times, but my overall impression of the book is positive.

If I hadn't already known, I would never have guessed that the same author wrote this book and The Girl on the Cliff: A Novel. They are extremely different stylistically, but they both focus on the importance of connecting with family and finding a place where you belong.

A MUST READ

Another absolutely fabulous story by Lucinda Riley. This is the third book of hers that I have read and I have loved all of them. (They were this book, The Girl on The Cliff, and The Orchid House.) The descriptions for her books typically say that if you loved Rebecca or Downton Abbey, this is the book for you. That may be true, but I personally am not a Downton Abbey fan (sue me) but I absolutely love these. Stayed up way too late to finish this book because of how captivating it is. She may not have the best writing out there, but her stories are off the charts. If you want an amazing story with all sorts of twists and turns that has you on the edge of your seat, or in my case jumping up and down while reading, this is the book for you. I write this of my own free will. I did not receive any offers or anything for this review. I honestly just think it's a fabulous book and hope other people love it like I did!

This is my second purchase of Steven Feuerstein PL/SQL book. I liked his first edition and decided to check out the 3rd version. He lays out Oracle internals with easy to understand examples. I would gladly recommend this book to anyone getting started or an experienced professional i.e. if they don't have one already! I benefited a whole lot and guess others will take advantage of it too.

3 1/2*'s But Have Patience, And Kleenex Handy!

I normally love Sharon Sala but this book although full of emotion was perhaps to full if you get my meaning.
Billie and Matt have a chance meeting on one stormy New Years Eve and shared a kiss that was one for the record books. Matt walks away from her and does not look back but they both remember that snowy night at the airport. Although they exchange kisses they don't exchange names.
Two years later Billie comes home with Scott (Matt's son)for a visit. She is shocked by seeing the one man she has not been able to forget. Matt is equally stunned and makes a promise to himself that if there is nothing between his son and this girl he will do whatever it takes to keep her this time. Of course this is not what happens and just when you think Billie is going to allow herself a happy ending something else happens. In the end Billie leaves and goes home to her dad. This is a second part of the story and does explain how and why Billie acts the way she does. See her dad has been emotionally abusing her for years. She does not know how to trust. Oh yes, she crys a lot.
One thing leads to another and Matt and Billie have a third shot at happiness but of course Billie is her worst own enemy agian but fear not the story does end with a happy ending.
This book is full of emotions but happiness is rare and I must agree with the views of another reviewer I don't highly that there are men out there like Matt and Scott. These guys are more then story book hero's. A couple of times the book dragged but eventually got back on track. Have patience when reading and make sure to have Kleenex handy since tears are almost a guarantee.

The Devil Does Nothing

No one would ever mistake "The Devil Wears Prada" for fine literature, but it was entertaining. Spoiled, entitled twenty something discovers that it's necessary to work hard to get what you want, while spoiled, entitled rich boss woman sees to it that she does work hard carrying out over the top ridiculous tasks. Whining ensues. The whining was kind of hard to take, but it was still fun to watch Andrea constantly have to jump through hoops to please Miranda, figuring that a year of this would be enough paying of dues to get her the prestigious editorial job she thought she deserved. The first book was such a success that I was kind of expecting a rehash of it for the sequel - but an entertaining rehash! That's not what I got.

First of all, unlike the first-person "Devil," "Revenge" is written in third person, which is a bizarre choice that makes it seem very removed from the original book. I never quite felt as if I was reading about the same characters. The story itself is... well, not much. Really. I mean, NOTHING happens. It's ten years later and Andrea (now known as "Andy"), who spent the entirety of "Devil" looking down her nose at anything having to do with fashion is now the proud editor and co-founder of... a bridal magazine. Yeah. She still giggles adorably about how clueless she is about fashion, but just as in the first book, not a single character enters a scene without a lengthy description of their wardrobe - complete with the appropriate contempt directed at anyone who dares wear clogs or pantsuits. And she also manages to create and run an utterly too-too high fashion magazine.

Andrea gets married in the first chapter to a wealthy society boy, and after making a few half-hearted attempts to look down her nose at the country club set, eagerly embraces her new lifestyle of weekends in the Hamptons and a ginormous NYC apartment. The "crushing secret" the book jacket promises is revealed within the first five pages. Max's mother has conveniently written her son a Jane Austen-esque letter in which she "beseeches" him not to marry Andrea, reminding him of what a great time he had when he (unbeknownst to Andrea) ran into his far more suitable, rich country club snob ex a few months ago, and which Max conveniently brings along to the wedding suite for Andrea to find. Andrea spends about half the book thinking Max has been cheating on her, and then that particular plot line disappears without a whimper.

Andrea has stopped whining about work, but that's probably because she doesn't DO any. Apparently her job at the magazine is to fly to exotic locales on the dime of celebrity brides to be where she stays in luxury hotels, interviews the celebs for 15 minutes, and then gets a massage. Back home, she gets to the office two hours before anyone else, but no mention is made of what she actually does. At one point she does spend "hours" (really? Hours?) writing a press statement, but other than that her official job title appears to be Lady of Leisure.

Most of the rest of the book is centered on Andrea's pregnancy, and the tacky maternity clothes she has to wear even after she gives birth, since she can no longer fit into the little black dress in a size 4. SIZE FOUR! Remember in "Devil" when she was a size 10? And she was 5'10 tall! How much does this woman weigh now? And yes, I said "woman", though the author continually refers to the now thirty-something Andrea and Emily as "girls." We skip randomly ahead a few months at a time until BOOM, Andrea is the devoted mother of a precious baby girl, who comes fully equipped with the perfect nanny.

Emily (my favorite character in "Devil", seriously) is back, but has undergone a personality transplant. Alas, the haughty, brown-nosing ice princess is no more. She has morphed into a tough talking, chain-smoking business woman who replaces the conveniently displaced-to-Colorado Lily as Andrea's new BFF, as well as co-founder of the bridal magazine. Andrea's social circle also includes the women in her new-moms group, headed by the "hippie dippie" counselor that Andrea delights in leading the other moms in ignoring and mocking, in true Mean Girls style. Oh, and of course, her clothes suck, too. The group also includes a nanny who - say it with me - conveniently turns out to be the current girlfriend of Alex, Andrea's bland boyfriend from the first book for whom she has been pining away all these years.

But what of Miranda Priestly, the titular "Devil" of the first book, and her "revenge"? You got me. The woman appears about three times, the first being halfway through the book. Out of the blue, she makes a multi-million dollar offer to acquire Andrea and Emily's magazine, since it's just that awesome. Emily is all over the idea, as is Andrea's husband, but a clause in the contract states that the full staff must stay on board for a year, which means they would be working for Miranda again. The idea makes Andrea break out in hives, but she manages to repeatedly put off making a decision for months at a time. During those months, she freaks about the very thought of sharing air space with her former boss, who she knows will be out to get her. Hilariously, when they do come face to face at a meeting to discuss the sale of the magazine, Miranda hasn't the foggiest notion who Andrea is. So much for "revenge!" They meet a grand total of two more times, and both times Miranda is perfectly lovely. She even says "please" and "thank you" to her servants. However, just so we don't forget how truly eebil Miranda is, at the end of their second meeting Miranda finally sidles up to Andrea and delivers a Don Corleone style threat for her to just sign the contract already. And that is the end of Miranda's involvement in this tedious story.

I'd advise skipping this one, and waiting for the inevitable movie sequel. Hollywood managed to make a better story out of the first book. Maybe they can do it again, although there really isn't much to work with here.

Is this book even about anything?

This book reads like a conversation I might have with my three year-old. "And this this happened, and then this happened, and then this happened . . . and then . . " One giant, run-on sentence. I haven't even finished it and I probably won't because there are too many other good books out there.

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't expecting Moby Dick here. But this book has no central plot. Is it about Andy's marriage? Is it about her work? Her pregnancy? Her friends? And somebody else mentioned in a review the author's penchant for referring to Andy and Emily as "girls." Now, I'm no real expert here but as a 34 year-old WOMAN myself I'm fairly certain that I'm well past the "girl" designation. I notice that the author doesn't refer to Andy's husband as a "boy." That gets my goat.

It's a shame but while The Devil Wears Prada won't go down in the annals of Great American Literature, it was engaging and fun and moderately well-written. This seems like such a half-ditch attempt--and at so many years after the original, that's a little weird to me. Makes me think the first book was really a one-hit wonder.

Skip it, "girls." It's not worth it.

Pandering for a movie sequel

The Devil Wears Prada was one of my favorite beach/airplane reads. It dripped diamonds in its detail, warmed your heart in its witticisms, and made you cheer when Andy finally told Miranda to....well, we all know what was said.

I was excited and hopeful to crack open Revenge Wears Prada. I shouldn't have wasted my money.

Two words: movie sequel.

From the very first chapter of "Revenge Wears Prada" it was clear that the detail, witticisms and warmth that carried Weisberger's weak writing in the Devil Wears Prada, were gone. Instead Andy turns in to a whining sad sack, one that treats her spouse and friends so badly she is no long sympathetic. Instead, Andy very clearly needs therapy, as she is still having night terrors about Miranda Priestly 10 years later. Weisberger tries desperately to make Andy the heroine, but instead you find yourself wondering why in the world she cannot see what everyone else around her sees. Add in the casual and callous way that Andy treats her husband, the unforgiving nature, the obsession, and embarrassment and what you really have is a book that clearly shouts "I wrote this so I can make money off the screenplay". I only hope Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep are unavailable lest "Revenge" rubs off some of their shine as well.

Great information

As someone who has suffered from insomnia for most of my adult life, this book is a revelation. Dr. Gariti does an amazing job of making a broad range of complex medical issues very easy to understand. This book is also very comprehensive--it goes beyond all of the superficial issues that we all already know about and delves deeper into the how's and why's of being tired. He also does a fantastic job presenting not only the medical issues, but also the herbal and wholistic approaches as well.
If you are tired, or if you know someone who is tired, this book is a must read!!!!

This book offers no-nonsense methods to get your personal well being back in order. Most of think we know what to do in order to regain our youth, but this easy to read book provides a road map that will allow you to stick to it. I was so impressed with the way it was written that I ordered copies for all of my staff. Well done Dr. Jim.

Ending fatigue... and so much more!

This book will be a terrific resource for anyone suffering from fatigue. It is filled with great recommendations and technical background information written in an accessible way. What I enjoyed most was the simple, straightforward way in which Dr. Gariti described the various causes of fatigue. I think the patient tools he provides will prove useful to anyone who wants to take control of their health. I learned a great deal more about the various health issues I've experienced over the years, and now understand how they related to chronic fatigue. This book will be a useful tool for years to come.

In the final installment in Brown's Love Valley series set in the rough-and-tumble post-Civil War Reconstruction era, Indigo Hamilton's wedding day is finally here, and everything is just perfect until her groom's first wife--a Southerner whom Thomas had been told was dead--appears at the church with their son in her arms. Indigo, as always, is only concerned with her own status and feelings, but Flannon Sullivan goads her into resuming her life despite her mortification and blighted hopes. He is also there when a Klan assassin, last seen in Redemption (2006), attacks Indigo, rendering aid and serving as bodyguard after Indigo recuperates. Enforced propinquity ensures that the two find themselves unwillingly attracted by each other's good points, while continuing to strike sparks off each other's perceived weaknesses. Brown ties up all the loose ends nicely, and readers will enjoy seeing Indigo finally get her own happy ending. Lynne Welch

I can't believe that I am saying this about a Carolyn Brown book, but......I hated the heroine and I hated this book! The heroine (if you want to call her that!) was absolutely hateful to everyone. She had no redeeming qualities that I could see. She had a sharp tongue, thought she was better than everyone else, and was a racist. She was constantly putting the hero down for not only being "a Rebel...but half-Irish and half-Mexican to boot." What was clearly meant to be humorous sexual tension between the two was nothing but spiteful sniping. And it was a lot of looooong, boring, and pointless sniping. After a few chapters I started skimming, and at 70% I gave up. I just couldn't take any more. I gave the last Carolyn Brown book that I read 5 stars. I don't think this one deserved even 1 star. I have deleted it from my kindle. I wish I delete it from my mind.

If you are a Carolyn Brown fan (as I am!), please take this as a warning that it is NOT like her other books....no charm, no humor.
If you have never read a Carolyn Brown book before, please do NOT start with this one. She is one of the best writers out there and this is not a good example of her work.

Hated this Heroine

Found nothing redeeming about our heroine and did not find any development of romance between our protagonists. Indigo was spoiled and nasty.

Promise (Love's Valley Historical Romance)

A very good story and the Love Valley Historical Romance series is one of the best. Theist and turns and enjoyable. However I did get a tad bored about 3/4 of the way because of to much explanation of one tree or etc but once again the story picks up and I'm glad I stuck with. Love the author as she doesn't need to use cuss words and or heavy sex scenes to hold your interest and it's still a good book. Enjoy! GAB
