The first book in the Chronicles of Applecross is an adventure of magic and the paranormal.

A job gone wrong has made Lora Blackgoat a laughing stock as a smuggler and mercenary, so when a friend asks her for help she jumps at the chance to restore her reputation. What she uncovers in her investigation not only leads her to the sadistic militant religious Order of Guides and to Roman, a dangerous nephilim who also hunts the killer, she discovers that the killer has broken the fundamental laws and of magic and a conspiracy that goes back to her own dark past.

The author has created a great fantasy world that promises great entertainment. The conflicts in the plot are well detailed and the motivations of the characters clearly defined in this smooth flowing plot. All of the characters have strong, attention grabbing personalities that keeps the readers entertained throughout.

Lora is a kick ass heroine, who makes mistakes and thinks she knows it all, but finds that everything is what it seems. She's one of those characters you don't know whether to cheer her on or yell at her to stop, but the reader definitely wants to know what she will do next. She has a romantic interest in Seth, one of the Black Watchmen, but also finds herself attracted to Roman.

I almost put this book down at first, the book starts off with Lora on a job, but seems to proceed slowly to the next point, but I am very glad that I kept reading and once the plot really gets going there is never a dull moment with lots of action. The author creates an intriguing and complex world with vivid intensity and great detail. I am looking forward to reading Lora's next adventure.

Downloaded Chaos Born for my wife to our Kindles and decided to give it a read.I was drawn into the story from the start, the characters are well built and quite strong.The setting and the road our heroine travels is well set out and described.For those who like Steam Punk or Ilona Andrews On the Edge novels, just a little shorter.Looking forward to the next book with these characters.Thanks for a good read Rebekah.

very intense and deep fantasy read

I'm finding this a really difficult review to write. I love fantasy books, especially those that are intense and have depth, not just the light and fluffy that's the norm. I loved Lora too as the heroine, she's struggling, has a hard life, and yet has her own code of integrity.
So what am I having a problem with? Well, there's almost too much depth here, the book is so stuffed full of different types of people, Humans, Full Bloods and Mixed Breeds, run within a world that’s dystopian and so very different. Add to that the problem that The Weald, the place where this book is set, is a little world of its own set within another world, with its own specific rules....Then there's the fact of so many different types of hierarchies, each having their own rules about what's acceptable, and who takes precedence....you can see where I was really confused in the beginning. In fact even though I’ve finished I’m still unclear about so much. Hopefully book two will help clarify issues.
Lora is having problems after her last job went wrong, not her fault but mud sticks. She owes money to the wrong type of person, one who'll take his dues in blood if necessary, so she needs to make some cash quickly. But there's been weird goings on in The Weald, and she's been asked by a childhood friend to look into it – not for the cash she needs but for friendship. She hopes sorting this mess and finding the killer will restore some of her credibility. Then she gets more enmeshed, bullied into doing things she doesn't want, beaten up time and again, put in the path of danger from people her in her world and from supernatural sources. She's so much she needs to know but doesn't, everyone is holding secrets that concern her, and not knowing can lead her into real dangers.
Its a very intense read, with so much to take in. Just when I thought I was getting a fix on the characters something would happen that confused me once again. Seth, a Balck Watchman – one sort of the law keepers- seemed very arrogant, he's a part time lover of Lora's and clearly he was very sexy, but what does Orella, the woman who helped bring up Lora, have against him? Then there's Roman, Nephilm, who’s seriously hot...yet at first meeting he and Lora do not get on at all well. I can see the beginnings of a love triangle there forming – maybe :) And what's behind Lora's charm pendant that Orella gave her as a child, and is so insistent that she always wears it. What about the fact Lora can use magic when she shouldn’t be able to, and has to keep that concealed?
Its a novel packed so full of secrets, conspiracies, dangers, and combined with the myriad of types of character and the different levels of law keepers, I almost gave up trying to work out what was going on. For me its a potentially great read, but so confusing, with little background information to let me work out how everyone fits together and what their role is. It almost feels like I’ve jumped into a well established existing series, so though I think its got five star potential for me, this book is a three star read. I did enjoy it, but could have got so much more out of it if I’d understood more instead of feeling like I was floundering in a sea of oddities.
Its a bargain price though for a solid 301 pages – currently free! So you've nothing to lose by getting this, and it may be that the confusion I felt is purely personal and it works better for others. Its partly steampunk in feel, and TBH that’s something I struggle with and usually avoid, but its not heavy on the tech side so not a huge problem.

A large, vivid, ambitious novel from one of the country's most accomplished American writers, offering a powerful portrait of life among the hunters, renegades, and wanderers infesting the Florida Everglades in the century's early decades. Matthiessen's (African Silences, 1991, etc.) latest is in many ways a sequel to his 1990 novel, Killing Mister Watson. In that work, the violent, vigorous figure of Edgar Watson dominated the action. A settler in the still wild Everglades in the early years of the century, Edgar, with his reputation as a killer, was both respected and feared by his neighbors. Then, in 1910, died during a confrontation with a posse. But who actually fired the fatal shot? Had Edgar fired first? And was he in fact a murderer? His son Lucius, an academic, has tried repeatedly to escape from his father's lengthy shadow. Once again, in the 1950s, Lucius is drawn reluctantly back into the struggle to puzzle out what his father was when a cache of documents about him comes to light. In the company of some of his father's cronies and a few of his bitter enemies, all of them old men nursing grudges and powerful recollections of frontier days in the Everglades, Lucius travels ever deeper into the wilderness. Along the way he hears some extraordinary tales about the lives of the local farmers, hunters, smugglers, and moonshiners, assembles a moving portrait of the destruction of the fragile ecosystem of the Everglades, and finally discovers the painful, complex truth about his father's life and death. Lucius's long, complex relationship with his father's memory is brilliantly handled, as is the portrait of the fate of the Everglades, its wildlife, and its tough, idiosyncratic inhabitants. Peter Matthiessen is a naturalist, explorer and writer. His works of fiction include At Play in the Fields of the Lord, Far Tortuga and the acclaimed 'Watson Trilogy'. His explorations have resulted in many fine works of non-fiction, among them Birds of Heaven, The Cloud Forest and The Tree where Man was Born. In November 2008, at age 81, he received his second National Book Award for Shadow Country, an 890-page revision of a trilogy of novels he released in the 1990s.

Bogged Down in an Impenetrable Swamp

I sat down to read this book with a sense of eager anticipation, having greatly enjoyed Peter Matthiessen's first book in the Watson trilogy, "Killing Mr Watson". I put it down, nearly a month later, with a sense of profound disappointment. "Lost Man's River" is not a book in the same class as its predecessor.
"Killing Mr Watson" told the story of Edgar Watson's life in Southern Florida and his eventual death at the hands of a posse of his neighbours. "Lost Man's River" tells the story of Watson's son Lucius, a historian with both an academic and an emotional interest in finding out the truth about his father's life. (Perhaps it would be more accurate to say that, while Lucius's academic interest lies in finding out the truth about his father's life, his emotional interest lies in confirming his own preconceived ideas about his father's life). By the time of the events narrated in the book (around 1960) Lucius is an elderly man. The book follows his journeys around Florida and his meetings with the surviving few people who remember Edgar Watson, including his reunion with his long-lost brother Rob.
The sentimental journeyings of a septuagenarian historian do not make for an enthralling plot; indeed, the book has a loose, episodic structure and very little in the way of coherent plot at all. In "Killing Mister Watson" the characters were vividly drawn, especially the dominating figure of Watson himself. In "Lost Man's River" there is much less in the way of characterisation. Although Watson is an ever-present thought in Lucius's mind, he obviously cannot be introduced as a character in his own right as he has been dead for fifty years. Lucius is merely a bore, and the other characters are stiff and lifeless. The old people's reminiscences of the past are tedious and confusing, and tend to get bogged down in an excess of genealogical detail. In an attempt to add to the interest of the plot, Matthiessen provides a brief love-interest for Lucius in the form of a much younger woman, but this episode struck me as very unconvincing.
Not everything about the book is bad. There are some vivid descriptions of the natural beauty of the Everglades. There is also some sharp commentary about the way in which that natural beauty has been despoiled by the modern world, and about Southern racism. Unlike most of what has preceded it, the ending is genuinely gripping, as old feuds end in violence and Lucius makes an unwelcome discovery which forces him to reassess his view of the past. Unfortunately, to get to the ending one has to wade through some very tedious passages; like some of the characters, I often felt that I was bogged down in an impenetrable swamp.

Read "Killing Mr. Watson" first

This is the second book of a trilogy that begins with "Killing Mr. Watson," and ends with "Bone by Bone." If you read Killing Mr. Watson, and were fascinated by it, as many readers and critics have been, you'll be tempted to read the rest of the trilogy. Dead Man's River begins many years after E.J. Watson's death. Watson's son, Lucius, is struggling to reconstruct his father's life and death. You might have noticed in Killing Mr. Watson that the story, told by those who knew Watson, contains gaps, ambiguities, contradictions and mysteries. There's plenty of room for sequels.

Lucius finds some answers, and also uncovers new mysteries and contradictions. Along the way, you'll learn more about the many fascinating characters you first encountered as narrators in "Killing Mr. Watson." The final book in the trilogy, "Bone by Bone," tells the tale again, from the point of view of Mr. Watson.

The Mr. Watson trilogy is reminiscent of the well-known film, Rashomon, by Akira Kurosawa. It re-tells the same tale several times, from different perspectives. This is a gutsy kind of trilogy to write. A lesser author would burden the reader with repetition and excessive detail. Mathiessen, one of few authors ever to win one National Book Awards for fiction, and another for nonfiction, is up to the task, if anyone is.

Dead Man's River suffers from the usual problems found in the second book in a trilogy. It doesn't begin the story, nor end it, and it's nearly incomprehensible if you haven't read the first book. Consider, who would enjoy "The Two Towers," the second book of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, if he or she had not first read "The Fellowship of the Ring," and did not intend to read "Return of the King"?

If, after reading Killing Mr. Watson, you're eager to know about Mr. Watson and the other pioneer families of that time and place, read the rest of the trilogy, in sequence. I think you'll be glad you did. I certainly am glad that I did. Matthiessen is a master of so many things -- pioneer history of Florida, diverse cultures, nature writing, environmentalism, character development, historical accuracy and detail, dead-on vernacular dialog, inventive style, and, in this trilogy, compelling mystery.

Also, in this trilogy, Mathiessen explores the nature of truth itself, as the same story is retold several times by people who all think they know the truth, though their understanding is filtered by their own perspectives, limited knowledge and vested interests.

On the other hand, if Killing Mr. Watson filled your cup, you might want to stop there. It works very well as a stand-alone novel.

The "action" is genealogical; the main character, dead.

If you have ever driven yourself to near distraction trying to trace a family genealogy, with duplicate names, multiple marriages, and family migrations, you might have prepared adequately for Lost Man's River, which is, essentially, a detailed family genealogy. And though you may be fascinated by some of the characters, be prepared to do a great deal of page-flipping to try to keep all the characters all straight.
There is not much direct action. Except for the ending, the most exciting events take place in the past and surround the death of E. J. Watson when the now fifty-year-old narrator, his son Lucius, was a child. The action that takes place in the present occurs primarily through interviews forty years after E.J. Watson's death as Lucius tries to separate truth from myth.
The book is not fatally dull because of the historical, sociological, cultural, and geographical insights the author also provides. Illustrating the conflicting cultures and motivations of very poor whites, blacks, Indians,and "mixed breeds" as they hunt, fish, drink, and interact, often disastrously, in the Florida Everglades, Lost Man's River also traces the life, death, and possible salvation of a wild and much threatened natural environment.
With its large cast of characters, complex familial relationships, and carefully researched depictions of the forty year time span of the "action," this is a book of enormous reach. It is not surprising that it took the author twenty years to bring it to fruition.

Rebel is a great conclusion to this wonderful series! I honestly didn't expect to like the Brides of Alba series as much as I have--but I'm almost crazy about them! I LOVE anything medieval-ish, and this series takes place in the late 6th century, so...yep, Linda Windsor is now a new favorite author of mine!!

I really grew to love the two main characters! Both Alyn and Kella caught my interest as children when I read Healer, so I was eager to read about them in Rebel now that they've grown up. Kella surprised me in a very big way (though I won't say how to prevent giving away a spoiler ;-), but after I got over my surprise, it really helped to shape her character and show her growth throughout the novel.

And while I really loved the characters, what I loved most about Rebel--this whole series, really!--is the historical detail that Windsor goes into! Not only is there a lot of suspense, adventure, and even some sword-play, but there is also a large amount of history woven in. And very tastefully done--I never grew bored or felt the details too tedious. A few times it got complicating, but the information at the beginning of the book helps a lot!

The way Alyn and Kella's wedding is brought about was really neat, and I just loved watching them fall in love with each other. While the book is gruesome in places, I don't think it's too mature of a read for teens--as long as they don't have a weak stomach. While there are a few scenes between a husband and wife, Windsor did a great job of keeping the book clean. All in all Rebel lived up to the expectations I had for it. I can't wait to see what Linda Windsor will write next!

Thrilling conclusion to Arthurian Saga

Feisty Kella O'Toole, a foster-sister of Alyn's, is the queen's scribe. She's holding a secret that can jeopardize her standing at the Court. When word arrives of an attack on the border guard and her father is missing and her fiance is dead, Kella is determined to do whatever she can to find her father. Alyn agrees to run an errand for the queen - see the Grail genalogies safely delivered to the pristesses of the Grail Church. With the land in an uproar bethween the Grail and Celtic churches over the teaching of the Roman Church, Alyn comes to realize that God has a far bigger mission for this unworthy priest. Will he heed God's call? And will Kella find the forgiveness that she longs for?

This is the third and final book in the Brides of Alba Series. Like the other two, this one is action packed and filled with lively characters. I had been waiting anxiously for this book to come out and was glad to be able to read it. I love the way that the author makes the history of Britain's early years come to life along with the struggle of the early Christian church. Very similar in nature to her Irish series, Fires of Glennmara, this series looks at Christianity in early Scot/British history.

I recommend this book to those who are intrigued by all things Celtic, fans of historical romance, and Christian fiction.

This young Confederate's tale of battle begins with his introduction to the unit in Virginia and continues through to his furlough home after he suffers a serious battle wound at Second Manassas. Among the thousands who served in what arguably was the most renowned combat unit in the Southern army, Hood's Texas Brigade, Campbell holds the dubious distinction of being the most wounded man, sustaining six wounds during the course of the war.

Campbell praises Southern women who cared for soldiers along the railroad line from Richmond to Montgomery and recalls eating ten ears of green corn after three days of short rations and a hard day of fighting. He recounts falling asleep on picket duty despite the fear of punishment by death, and describes being under cannon fire and suffering a painful leg injury. The terrible conditions of battle—eating and sleeping too little, marching and drilling too much, cleaning weapons and standing watch in the rain and cold—are vividly real under Campbell's pen, which also praises his leaders, Lee, Jackson, and other Confederate officers.

Skoch and Perkins have supplemented the record of Campbell's wartime service with his letters written during and after the war. His remarkable firsthand account of life in the 5th Texas will find a permanent niche in the literature of the Civil War.

About the Author
Fascinated with the Civil War since childhood, George Skoch studied history at Kent State University, has written and collaborated on several books and articles, and has served as coeditor of Blue & Gray magazine.Mark W. Perkins holds degrees from the University of Akron and the University of Hawaii at Manoa. He is a member of the Kent Civil War Society and a Civil War reenactment group which portrays the 5th Texas Infantry, Company A.

The Civil War experience of a young Texan in Hoods Texas Brigade

Originally written solely for family and close friends, Robert Campbell a young Texan wrote about his experiences as a soldier in the 4th Texas Infantry Regiment in the famous "Hood's Texas Brigade". This young man from the area around Houston, Texas joined the infantry brigade when he was 18 years old. The book was orignally written in 1866 immediately after the Civil War and Private Campbell has outstanding memory and detail throughout his book about the war expereinces that he and other members of the brigade went thru. He participated in the early battles of the war (Gaines Mill, 2nd Manassas (2nd Bull Run), and other fierce and bloody battles. His description of battle, camp life, marching, and stories of forage are a fascinating read. He has excellent prose and observation throughout his book (journal). Private Campbell also has the dubious distinction of having been wounded six times throught the course of his enlistment which makes him the most wounded soldiers in the Texas Brigade (though a few wounds were close calls wherre they almost proved fatal). The chapters are:

- Chapter 2: Yorktown - Chapter 7: Road To Manassas
- Chapter 3: Seven Pines - Chapter 8: Second Manassas

- Chapter 5: The Seven Days Battles - Appendix A. Letters and Other Writings
- Appendix B: Muster Roll Entires for Robert Campbell
This is an excellent history of not only Private Campbell's experiences but also of Hood's Texas Brigade and the fierce battles they were in. Private Campbell was on leave to recover from a wound and didn't participate at Gettysburg, but joined the regiment right before the Battle of The Wilderness and met up again after being wounded while the Hood Brigade was at the Battle of Chickamauga. Another excellent history is the letters that Private Campbell wrote to his hometown newspapers and application for disability. This journal was discovered by one of his decendents who gave to historians/authors George Skoch and Mark W. Perkins. This is an excellent book that is highly informative and interesting. It is highly recommended for Civil War Historians, Scholars, Students and Buffs who are interested in Civil War History, he Army of Northern Virginia, Hood's Texas Brigade, the battles in the western theatre, and Texas History. A great read!

Eyewitness accounts of bloodshed, aftermath, long marches, starvation and much worse fill the pages of this riveting firsthand testimony of the front lines of America's deadliest war. Lone Star Confederate is a welcome and strongly recommended addition to Civil War collections and reading lists.

Decent early war

This is a good first person account of life in the Texas Brigade in the early years of the war. If you're looking for detail on anything past Second Manassass, or an overview of the entire conflict, this is NOT the book for you. Still, a good and unique perspective of some of the finest moments of one of the finest brigades in the Confederate Army.

Brianna thought she would be with her high school sweetheart Colin forever. She certainly wasn't expecting him to break up with her to focus on football and college parties. Four years later her life is finally getting back on track, her heart has mostly mended and her dreams of being a chef are within reach. When Colin returns with his dreams of being a football star in tatters Brianna realises she may not be as over him as she had thought. She may still love him but can she ever forgive him and allow him into her life again?

I really enjoyed this book. It is a short, sweet read that many people will enjoy. I didn't like Colin due to the way he left Brianna but the author has really developed him throughout the book. It was great watching the characters mature and become adults who put other people before themselves. The characters and their emotions are realistic making the book an engaging read. I was torn between wanting Brianna to forgive Colin or not but I love the way the book turned out. Bethany Lopez has created a world and characters that I want to keep on reading about; I want to see a couple of the secondary characters get their happily ever after. This book is a great set up for a series mentioning several characters who obviously have stories to be told and I hope we will get to see that. Overall I would recommend this to all lovers of a sweet romance who also don't mind a sex scene or two.

A sweet, feel-good story with a HEA

This is a sweet story about high school sweethearts in love, but they separate with the all too common 'it's not you, it's me' feeling. No one wants to hear that! Well, those weren't the words Colin said to Briana, but they might as well have been. She was devastated...but then she was in high school at the time. Being a high school teacher, I see that same drama all too closely every day. The story quickly picks up four years later when Colin returns to town and sees Briana. D-Bag alert!! Colin immediately saw what he had missed the last four years, and kudos to Briana for not giving him the time of day....at first. Little did they know that they would be in for the shock of their lives with Colin's past coming up to slap them both in the face.

At 23% in, I could feel the angst that was coming. I just knew that I knew that I knew what was around the pike to disrupt what Briana... and I ... wanted for her character. Yes, I knew what was coming. So, I waited...and waited...as the story progressed in a sweet romantic fashion...and waited some more, until....Whoa! That was not what I knew! I was floored that the angst building in me for something I knew and expected was really the buildup for a real shocker! Then, the author adds a sensitive and controversial subject on top of that shocker...wow! I didn't know what I thought I knew. Never judge a book by its cover and never judge a story by others you've read. You'll be surprised every time.

Colin is a hottie with a taut body and dimples in his cheeks. Dimples make me smile and swoon; they always have...don't judge me. But, we have more hotties in the book. Rich is Colin's best friend...the ladies man who loves 'em and leaves 'em, and Kent who has an 'understanding' with Briana, but nothing serious. Well, that 'understanding' is pretty much one-sided. Rich and Briana harbor a secret that Colin can never learn, but neither will lie to him if the subject ever comes up. Guess what? The subject came up. Yep. Just like that. I did feel like this part was kind of glossed over and forgiveness came fairly quickly. I would liked to have seen more conflict there, but I was still pleased with the outcome.

I didn't connect with the characters as much as I would have liked; it was nothing against the story or the characters, themselves; it was just me.
