Smoke and mirrors ..and a corpse or 2

This is book 1 in the Grace Holiday mysteries, and it is a charming mix of wit, humor, light hearted romance, and murder. When I first saw the title I thought this would be a mystery with supernatural or fantasy elements, and was delightfully surprised at what the title actually refers to. In some ways, the mystery is predictable, and does contain some "stock" elements, but the book is more than saved by the author's tongue in cheek witty approach, and her ability to set scenes and slowly build suspense until the "gotcha!" comes, and it always works, too. The writing is very good, and the plot has some unexpected twists that place the reader in a labyrinth of family relationships, romantic relationship histories, grievances, vendettas injustices, and greed. Still, the author never "cheats" and all questions end up answered, motives revealed, and each couple end up with the right partner. There are neither earth shaking nor universally significant issues here, but there is fun, a few shivers, and lots of smiles.

A magical mystery that will entice you right from the first page!

The workers of the Straker Toy Company are looking forward to their boss, Franklin Straker's, fiftieth birthday celebration. It's not that they like their boss. Quite the opposite in fact, they consider him a tyrant. But it's not every day that they get to attend a celebration at the Dragon's Lair, the premier magic theater in Manhattan.
However, on this Halloween night there is more than just magic in the air. There is more murder, when Grace's boss' wife is found dead on stage. The death is ruled a suicide, but Grace Halliday is pretty sure one of her co-workers was involved, and it's up to her to find out who.
I like magical mysteries, and I especially like when they grip me right from the first page. Deadly Magic gripped me right from the prologue, when the to-be-murdered victim is thinking about how someone wants here dead. I loved the perspective from the victim, because so rarely do you get to hear the first person from the victim.
Deadly Magic quickly changes to the point of view from Grace Halliday on the night of her boss' fiftieth birthday and the night of the murder. From there the action is nonstop as Grace tries to unveil the murderer.
I really liked Grace. She's a likeable sleuth and I could completely relate to her with her horrible job situation, and her tyrannical boss!
I have no hesitation in recommending Deadly Magic. It was a fun read and I'm looking forward to the second book in the series, Deadly Reunion, due to be released in December.

Needs editorial help.

Story isn't bad, but someone should have taken the time to proofread and correct grammar. There are many instances of mixed verb tenses and pronouns that don't agree with the rest of the sentence. As an older person who learned proper grammar in school, I often wanted to make corrections with my red pencil!
