Cork O’Conner returns for “hold-your-breath suspense” (Booklist, starred review) in the thirteenth novel in the New York Times bestselling mystery series.
During a blizzard one bitter winter night, just days before Christmas, the car belonging to the wife of a retired local judge is discovered abandoned on a rural county road in Tamarack County. After days of fruitless searching, there is little hope that she’ll be found alive, if she’s found at all.
Cork O’Connor, the ex-sheriff of Tamarack County, notices small things about the woman’s disappearance that disturb him. When the beloved pet dog of a friend is brutally killed and beheaded, he begins to see a startling pattern in these and other recent dark occurrences in the area. And after his own son is brutally attacked and nearly killed, Cork understands that someone is spinning a deadly web in Tamarack County. At its center is a murder more than twenty years old, for which an innocent man may have been convicted. Cork remembers the case only too well. He was the deputy in charge of the investigation that sent the man to prison.
With the darkest days of the year at hand, the storms of winter continue to isolate Tamarack County. Somewhere behind the blind of all that darkness and drifting snow, a vengeful force is at work. And Cork has only hours to stop it before his family and friends pay the ultimate price for the sins of others.

*Starred Review* If Krueger’s publisher had released just one of the scenes in this novel set in the North Woods of Minnesota, the one in which a car spins off an icy road onto the frozen surface of Iron Lake, trapping two young people inside as the ice cracks and water rushes in, the asking price of an entire novel would have been entirely justified. But this is just one of many such scenes of hold-your-breath suspense, heightened by the isolating blizzards of a Minnesota winter and the eerie presence of a stalker. In the thirteenth in Krueger’s series starring Cork O’Connor, the Tamarack County private investigator (and former sheriff) is called in to help find a misanthropic judge’s wife, who has disappeared. That incident is quickly followed by the killing of a woman friend’s dog, with additional evidence indicating that the woman is being stalked. O’Connor is able to trace the incidents to a cold case from more than 20 years before. Complicating matters, O’Connor’s son’s relationship with the embattled woman’s daughter places his son in peril. Because Krueger works in the history of his characters’ relationships in a clear and elegant way, this exceptionally scary suspense story will prove riveting for both newcomers to the series and readers who have followed Cork as he and his family have aged and grown. --Connie Fletcher
Review
“...a winter’s tale that will both break and warm the reader’s heart.... Krueger’s evident empathy for the Ojibwe and their traditions and values blends seamlessly with horrific violence played out against O’Connor’s struggles to heal his family’s wounds—and his own.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))

“Krueger is in fine form in this superb, highly atmospheric tale, deftly capturing a wide range of emotions and conflicts between assorted characters. . .you’re in for a real treat.” (Lansing Journal (Michigan))

A fine read from a fine man
By Maia
Not only is Wm. Kent Krueger a fine writer, he is also a fine man. I was especially impressed with his dedicating this book to Pat and Gary, the owners of Once Upon a Crime bookstore in Minneapolis, MN. This couple, with their small garden level independent bookstore, are the biggest supporters of crime writers around. They sponsor book signings week after week bringing interesting new authors to the attention of the crime reading public. I've met Kent Krueger there many times for book signings when his new books are launched and he always has a good word for for his fans, most of whom he recognizes on sight. Another thing I very much appreciate about Kent Krueger's writing is that he steers away from using excessive profanity, abuse of animals and humans, sexual deviancy, and other disgusting human traits. He writes a good mystery. He writes about characters who actually do populate northeastern Minnesota. Take it from me, I am one of those northeastern Minnesota natives (from Aurora actually) and I've known a few of them in my life. We are a melting pot of people of many different ethnic heritages along with our Native American brothers and sisters. Thanks again, Kent, for another fine read.

Tamarack
By Kindle Customer
I have read all of Krueger's provious novels and really enjoyed them all. This one was extremely well done - it had a great plot, introduced some new important characters along with the old familiar ones, had a two pronged approach to the catalysts that occured in the story, was quite exciting, and I just loved it. This author hits a home run with all of his works.

A decent read
By Henry E. Dorfman
I am a Steve Hamilton junky and, having reached the bottom of the barrel, bit on the cross-promotion of this book. Hamburger is okay, but hard to swallow after a diet of ribeye.
It was entertaining enough. The plot was okay but not entirely plausible. Good usage of subplots should’ve fleshed out the characters but they somehow still seemed to be caricatures.
The usage a clichés was a bit heavy handed. One really tainted the experience for me (spoiler alert). That was the presumed dead villain rising up to make one last lunge at the protagonist. I’ve seen that more than enough and the clumsy set-up for this one is far too obvious.
In spite of the flaws, it moves along pretty well. I’ll give the author another try.
