A compelling historical narrative on the Civil War's second year that will stand the test of time and remains great reading
By Kiwiwriter
Bruce Catton is one of the more amazing writers I've ever read, and his prose both becomes the energy of a highly skilled journalist (which he was) and a highly skilled historian (which he also was).
In the fairly short space (by the Brobdingnagian standards of the Civil War), he covers the decisive first year-and-a-half of the struggle, in which it transformed from being a small-scale argument over states' rights into being an all-out battle over slavery and to define the nation's future course.
Mr. Catton's writing style is lucid and thoughtful. He repeatedly shows how the leaders and ordinary people of the North and South had to contend with a war that was expanding and going out of control. What was the Union seeking to accomplish? How could a Confederacy whose only assets were cotton and courage survive? And just what would be done about the vast and seemingly indigestible mass of black people held in slavery across Secessia?
It's astonishing from the perspective of 150 years later, when the descendants of slaves are generals, CEOs, astronauts, artists, and president of the United States, to read serious-minded people arguing that blacks could not possibly do so. However, I have to remind myself that in many ways, very little of that has changed today...there are still thousands of white people who hold the same ideas, in spite of Zora Neale Hurston, James Baldwin, Whitney Moore Young, Percy Lavon Julian, and Guion Bluford. (I want readers to learn something here)
There is little new about the American Civil War, except perhaps interpretations of it -- it was the first war in which both sides left behind voluminous paperwork. The Union kept vast official records, while generals, politicians, and ordinary soldiers and civilians wrote memoirs after the fact, with the generals blaming each other (on their own side), and the ordinary soldiers and civilians detailing the horror and humor of the war. Mr. Catton has used many of these accounts to provide depth to the narrative, but it is not heavily told in their own voices -- mostly, the voice and interpretations are his.
The book concludes with the thundering battle of Antietam, the bloodiest day in American history. On that day, the anniversary of the ratification of the Constitution, thousands of Americans perished to define what the document meant. Ultimately, the Confederates were forced to withdraw to Virginia, which enabled President Abraham Lincoln to issue his Emancipation Proclamation, which did not free a single slave, but did two things:
First, on the practical plane, it prevented British and French intervention on the Confederate side, as neither nation was willing to fight to preserve slavery.
Second, on the moral plane, it stated that the Union was fighting to end slavery, and the war was now elevated to a higher level than states' rights and economics.
Mr. Catton argues that because of these two factors, Antietam rather than Gettysburg is the turning point of the Civil War, and that may be. Other experts will argue this to eternity, but one fact remains: Bruce Catton wrote a compelling historical narrative that will stand the test of time
